In Anaheim, California yesterday, Funimation announced at its panel at the 2010 Anime Expo a number of the titles it intends to release on home video over the next year or so.
The biggest title on the list is without a doubt the announcement of the Trigun: Badlands Rumble film which was recently released in Japan just this past April and is a side-story to the popular 1998 television series. The entire voice cast as well as all of the biggest names behind the original television production returned to do the new film.
Yasuhiro Nightow’s original Trigun manga ended a few years ago so this film is likely to be the last new production related to the franchise. Funimation has also announced that it plans to release the film into American theaters for a limited run.
Funimation also announced that it intends to release Texhnolyze, Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, and the entire Tenchi Muyo! franchise (including the OVA’s, various television series, and movies) here stateside. All of these series were released here years ago but have all gone out of print as the companies previously holding the licences have all gone under over the past few years.
Also, Funimation commented that it will continue releasing the Hellsing Ultimate OVA series here in the states and that it has bought the rights for episodes 5-7 of the series. Funimation had released the previous four episodes on DVD back in 2008. There is currently no word whether or not episodes 5-7 will be released on Blu-ray as well or if the upcoming Blu-ray box set of episodes 1-4 that is being released later this year in Japan are included in this release announcement. Funimation also now has the rights to release the original Hellsing television series.
