The 2010 New York Comic Con has begun and with it comes some cool new announcements. IDW Publishing has made a deal with Toho Pictures to release a new Godzilla comic book series to begin in February 2011. This is the first time Godzilla has graced the pages of an American comic book since the mid-90’s when Dark Horse comics still had the rights to Godzilla.
Before then, Marvel Comics actually ran a short Godzilla series in the 80’s which actually featured Godzilla meeting other characters from the Marvel Universe such as Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.
In their press release, IDW has stated that for the first time Godzilla will be joined by many other monsters from the long-running film series such as Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan along with some new monsters and characters.
The previous Godzilla comics published by Dark Horse and Marvel only featured original characters and monsters — perhaps out of the added difficulty of having to buy the rights for the other monsters in the Toho film series.
This is exciting news and I’m glad to see Godzilla beginning to make his comeback into the American market, perhaps in preparation for the Legendary Pictures adaptation of the character set for 2012.
IDW currenty publishes titles based on the Star Trek and Doctor Who franchises as well as many others.
