For their August issue, Empire magazine was given special access onto the set of Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit films which included new photographs, interviews, and a few sneak peeks of the sets. Although Entertainment Weekly published two production photos last week showing Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf in full costume, the Empire magazine article promises to give more that the brief write-up present in last week’s EW.
These few images promise a return to Middle-Earth through the same cast and crew which brought The Lord of the Rings to life in such an exquisite fashion ten years ago.
Also, it was confirmed a few weeks ago that Benedict Cumberbatch (the Sherlock Holmes to Martin Freeman’s Watson in Steven Moffat’s recent Sherlock television series) will be portraying both Smaug the dragon as well as The Necromancer — who is the manifestation of Sauron prior to his return to Mordor. Martin Freeman is of course portraying Bilbo in the upcoming films.
As much as I am looking forward to Empire’s article on the films it does not make the wait for seeing Peter Jackson’s interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic story any better; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey won’t be out in theaters until December 2012, which is then followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again a year later in 2013.
