Blade of the Immortal will be adapted into a live-action film that is set to be released in 2017!
The big news was just announced on the Japanese film site Cinema Today and first caught by Vito on twitter a short time ago. Takashi Miike (13 Assasins, Ichi the Killer, Audition) will be directing the live-action adaptation of Hiroaki Samura’s stunning manga series. The only cast member revealed so far is Takuya Kimura, who will be playing Manji. I’m completely floored by the news and incredibly excited to see what the film will be like; I feel Miike is the perfect director for the adaptation and I especially loved 13 Assassins. Kimura is very popular and I thought he was good in Space Battleship Yamato as well as Howl in Howl’s Moving Castle. My first thought is that he is not rugged or well-built enough to play Manji but I’m hoping to be happily surprised by his take on the character. Filming on the Blade of the Immortal movie will begin in November.
Blade of the Immortal ran from 1993 to 2012 in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine and is published in the United States by Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse recently completed publishing the series in the States and has announced that they will be releasing an omnibus version of the series sometime in the future.
