Berserk Theatrical Film Project Announced (Updated)

It has just been leaked that on monday the February issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Newtype magazine will ‘officially’ announce that the previously advertised new Berserk anime project will be a theatrical film.

No other information is available as of yet, but I will update this post as soon as more news about the project is found.

Update 01: Here’s a quickly cut together image of the two-page spread from Newtype announcing the project. Looks like it could be a new version of the Golden Age Arc which was previously adapted in the 1997 television series. So does this mean it will be a series of films? or just one? More information when it becomes available.

Update 02: It’s official. The Berserk film project aims to adapt the ‘entire story’ of Kentaro Miura’s original work from the beginning. The animation studio handling the production is Studio 4°C (Known best for Mind Game, Genius Party, Detroit Metal City OVA, and Tekkon Kinkreet) and the production team is ‘aiming for the worldwide market’.

Update 03 (1/6/11): The official Berserk twitter updated several times today, adding some further details to yesterday’s announcement. The official twitter states that the first film is scheduled for a ‘mid-2011’ release date and that the voice acting cast is currently being finalized. Most importantly, it states that animating the entire series is a huge task that will take time to do and may not be entirely done as a film series — direct to video releases are also an option.

This really just confirms my excitement of the project as it really seems that they are intent on giving the royal treatment to adapting Kentaro Miura’s original work. I really can’t think of any better way of handling such a massive and graphic series any other way without being completely disrespectful to the source material.

Since the planned release date is this ‘summer’ I guess I can also start getting excited about seeing a trailer for the project soon.

This is the best news in all of human history.
