Gundam Unicorn Episode 4 Release Date

Sunrise and Bandai Visual have announced that the fourth episode of their popular Gundam Unicorn OVA series will premiere in Japanese theaters on November 12th and be released on home video a few weeks later on December 2nd. The new episode will be entitled ‘At the Bottom of the Gravity Well’.

This new episode begins the second half of the series and will introduce several new characters and mobile suits perhaps even including the highly anticipated ‘Shamblo’ Mobile Armor from the original novels.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin Anime Project Announced

This month’s issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Gundam Ace magazine announced that Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s manga adaptation of the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series entitled Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin would itself be adapted into animation.

Yasuhiko was a character designer and animation director on director Yoshiyuki Tomino’s 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam television series and has also worked on many other Gundam projects; his most recent contribution being character design work on the ongoing Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OVA series.

The announcement does not mention whether this adaptation of The Origin manga will be a film, OVA, or television series, stating only that a ‘anime project’ has begun (much like how the new Berserk and Rurouni Kenshin ‘anime projects’ have recently been announced). This month’s issue of Gundam Ace also celebrated the 10th anniversary and final chapter of Yasuhiko’s The Origin manga.

This announcement comes just a few weeks after Bandai announced Mobile Suit Gundam AGE television series for children. This new project clearly seems geared towards older fans of the franchise and will hopefully be more warmly recieved than Gundam AGE’s announcement.

Personally, I feel as though The Origin will take form as a film series as Gundam AGE will be airing in October on television and Gundam Unicorn has a firm hold on the direct-to-video market.

Only time will tell though and I for one am looking forward to this new interpretation of Yoshiyuki Tomino’s masterpiece. Also, I would love to know if Tomino has anything to do with this new project, and if he doesn’t, how he feels about this new project.

Gundam AGE Promotional Video & Announcement

Bandai announced the newest television series entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise two weeks ago. If I was ten I probably would think that this is totally badass. Otherwise this seems like a sensible marketing decision as Sunrise is still in the middle of releasing Gundam Unicorn which is clearly aimed at the older fans. Gundam AGE is scheduled to air in October, hopefully arriving around the same time as the 4th episode of the Gundam Unicorn OVA series.

Here is the official synopsis for the series:

Is been several hundred years since mankind had migrated into space, living inside space colonies. Wars on earth had long ended, and the world seems to be in a peaceful era.  But this peace is about to crumble.

A.G. (Advanced Generation) Year 101

An UE (Unknown Enemy) suddently appears, they attack and destroyed the space colonly [Angel].  This disaster is known as the ‘Sunset of the Angel’, and the peace on earth was replaced with war & despairs.

A.G. (Advanced Generation) Year 108

As the war with UE rages on, the once peaceful space colony [Ovan] was invaded by these unknown enemies.  Frit Asuno (7 yrs old boy) lives on this colony with his mother.  When the aliens invaded, his mother was killed.  Before she die, she uploaded her memory onto the AGE Device and gave it to her son.  And with this device, Frit will be able to pilot the ancient mobile suit Gundam.

A.G. (Advanced Generation) Year 115

Frit is now 14 years old, living in the space colony [Nora], stationed in the Earth Federal Military Base [Arinsuton].  Seven years had passed since he inherited the Gundam, and through years of research, he was able to engineer & completes the revolutionary AGE system for the Gundam (Gundam AGE-1), which is able to self evolved thru combat experience.

The time had finally came when the UE attacks [Nora], and now the 14 yrs old Frit will fight them with the Gundam.. can he overcome such a formidable adversary?

Gundam Unicorn Episode 2 Trailer (Updated)

The trailer for the second episode of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn has been released. It’s looks just as fantastic as episode one and it features a Char look-alike who pilots a red custom Zaku (with an official name that I am too lazy to look up at the moment).

It looks like it will be released to the Playstation Store on October 30th and the Blu-ray/DVD will hit stores in Japan a few weeks later on November 12th. Here’s to hoping that there will be another same-day international release for this episode as there was for episode one earlier this year.

Update: After a bit of searching it seems that the 2nd episode is indeed set to be released here as well. It’s up for pre-order right now on for a October 31st release.

Gundam UC Adverts

A few new advertisements have been released for Sunrise’s upcoming Gundam Unicorn OVA series. The first episode, ‘Day of the Unicorn’, will be available in Japan on the Playstation store on February 20th and the international release of the DVD/Blu-Ray will be on March 12th. It will be available on for a limited period of time. This sort of international release with a whole bunch of different subtitle languages is pretty much how I think most anime should be released…so I’m glad to see that Sunrise and Bandai are trying out this particular marketing plan with the popular Gundam franchise. Let’s hope it sells well. Meanwhile, Germany has announced that they will be releasing Evangelion 2.22 on Blu-Ray and DVD this summer….just a few months after it’s released in Japan. Where’s our stateside release? We are just now getting the ‘1.11’ director’s cut of the first movie on March 9th. Ridiculous!

Gundam 30th

As Mobile Suit Gundam’s 30th anniversary goes on, I have found two new videos that celebrate the occasion in the best way. The first video is a short film entitled ‘Ring of Gundam’ and is written and directed by the original creator of Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino. With the exception of his work on the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam compilation films, this represents his first original contribution to the franchise since Turn A Gundam in 2000. The second video is fan gold. This is a short video made for fun by the animators at studio Sunrise that shows every principle Gundam from all of the various spin-off stories over the past thirty years fighting together. It is important to point out that it also features a brief appearance by the Unicorn Gundam from the upcoming Gundam Unicorn OVA series next spring.

And, speaking of Gundam Unicorn, here is the promotional video that was premiered at a Gundam festival in Japan back in August.
