This month’s issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Gundam Ace magazine announced that Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s manga adaptation of the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series entitled Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin would itself be adapted into animation.
Yasuhiko was a character designer and animation director on director Yoshiyuki Tomino’s 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam television series and has also worked on many other Gundam projects; his most recent contribution being character design work on the ongoing Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OVA series.
The announcement does not mention whether this adaptation of The Origin manga will be a film, OVA, or television series, stating only that a ‘anime project’ has begun (much like how the new Berserk and Rurouni Kenshin ‘anime projects’ have recently been announced). This month’s issue of Gundam Ace also celebrated the 10th anniversary and final chapter of Yasuhiko’s The Origin manga.
This announcement comes just a few weeks after Bandai announced Mobile Suit Gundam AGE television series for children. This new project clearly seems geared towards older fans of the franchise and will hopefully be more warmly recieved than Gundam AGE’s announcement.
Personally, I feel as though The Origin will take form as a film series as Gundam AGE will be airing in October on television and Gundam Unicorn has a firm hold on the direct-to-video market.
Only time will tell though and I for one am looking forward to this new interpretation of Yoshiyuki Tomino’s masterpiece. Also, I would love to know if Tomino has anything to do with this new project, and if he doesn’t, how he feels about this new project.
The opening seqeuence for the upcoming PSP Black Rock Shooter video game has been released, gorgeously animated by ufotable. This is how the Black Rock Shooter OVA episode from 2010 should have looked. Also, a new Black Rock Shooter manga has just begun in Kadokawa’s Shonen ACE magazine (which also runs Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’s Neon Genesis Evangelion manga) in Japan that looks pretty interesting. I posted the cover page for the first chapter of the Black Rock Shooter: Innocent Soul manga adaptation above. Hopefully this means that another studio and director will eventually get around to doing another OVA or even television series….in my dreams anyways.
for those with PSP’s, the Black Rock Shooter video arrives in August and will include a special figma for the new character White Rock Shooter for those that purchase a special collector’s edition of the game.
After being on hiatus for over a year Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’s manga adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion is set to resume in Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace magazine on April 4th. Sadamoto had previously announced that the manga would return sometime this winter.
Viz Comics also recently published the 12th and most recent volume of the series here in America. Sadamoto is currently in the middle of adapting The End of Evangelion movie finale of the series for his manga.
Although a ton of different promotional projects for Evangelion have been going on in Japan since the release of Evangelion 2.22 on home video last summer, there still has been no word on the upcoming third film that is currently in production.
The last word was that Evangelion 3.0 is currently in the key animation stage and has a tentative release date for sometime in 2012.
