Star Trek Discovery: First Look

star-trek-discovery-poster

After an agonizing wait, CBS has finally lifted the veil from Star Trek Discovery. Discovery will be airing on CBS All Access this fall after premiering on the the regular television network. The new Star Trek series has also been enlarged from 13 episodes to 15 and each episode will be followed by Talking Trek, which will be a special post-show talk program as has been popular with The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.

Despite all of the new information that we now have about the series, it’s interesting to note that the U.S.S. Discovery herself is nowhere to be seen in this first trailer and indeed I doubt if anything that’s been shown so far is from much beyond the pilot. This is very exciting for me as the show seems to be saving it’s biggest surprises for later.

The trailer has given me plenty to speculate about until our next look at Discovery (perhaps at SDCC this year?) but it certainly looks absolutely spectacular; while pulling some visual cues from the recent Kelvin timeline films, there’s certainly never been a Star Trek television series that’s ever looked this stunning. It’s clear that CBS is very serious about making this the highest possible kind of must-watch TV by bringing the Star Trek franchise into a television landscape irrevocably changed by HBO.

I think I share the feelings of many longtime Star Trek fans when I say that I still wish that this new series were set in the post Dominion War/Nemesis era of the Prime universe but Discovery looks so promising that my trepidation over another prequel story is being eclipsed by my excitement at seeing a totally new take on the franchise that I love so much.

I can’t wait to see where this new story takes us!
